Tenants in Port Harcourt Demand Action Against Exorbitant Rent Prices
Tenants across various neighborhoods in Port Harcourt are expressing their frustration over what they describe as exorbitant house rent prices set by landlords. Areas including Ada-George, Garrison, GRA, Agip, Eneka Stadium Road, and the D-line axis have seen tenants banding together to voice their concerns.
In conversations with our reporter, tenants characterized the yearly rent charged by landlords as “outrageous,” reflecting a growing discontent with the current housing market. Many expressed that these high costs fail to take into account the prevailing economic challenges facing the country, further exacerbating the financial strain on renters.
“We are struggling to make ends meet, only to find that our landlords are charging even more than before,” one tenant lamented. “It feels like we are being exploited in a time when we should all be coming together to navigate these tough times.”
In light of these challenges, tenants are urging the Rivers State Government to intervene by implementing legislation aimed at regulating rental prices and curbing what they perceive as the excesses of landlords. This call for action underscores the need for a more balanced approach to housing, which takes into consideration the hardships faced by families in the current economic climate.
As the situation unfolds, tenants remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and that meaningful changes will be made to ensure fair housing practices in Port Harcourt.
