The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to adopt renewable energy solutions in its Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to address rising energy costs and promote sustainability. This resolution followed the adoption of a motion titled “Need for Utilisation of Renewable Energy in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the Federal Government” sponsored by Hon. Esosa Iyawe during plenary.

The House noted that Nigeria has long struggled with unreliable power supply while relying heavily on fossil fuels, particularly oil and gas. This dependence, lawmakers said, has significantly increased operational costs for sectors, including MDAs, leading to financial strain. Hon. Iyawe pointed out that renewable energy offers a cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally sustainable alternative which many countries have already embraced.

According to reports referenced by the House, renewable energy sources could generate about 60 GW of electrical power, which would significantly enhance Nigeria’s industrialisation. Lawmakers further highlighted that renewable energy aligns with global efforts to adopt safer and more sustainable power sources.

The House expressed concern over the country’s energy crisis, noting that many government power facilities are outdated, unreliable, and in disrepair, despite substantial funds allocated for maintenance annually. Lawmakers also criticised the reliance on diesel generators, citing their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 20% by 2030.

Hon. Iyawe stated that adopting renewable energy would not only reduce operational costs but also strengthen energy security and fulfil the country’s global climate commitments. He called for immediate government action to integrate these solutions in MDAs and schools to encourage broader adoption.

The House mandated its Committee on Renewable Energy to ensure the implementation of this initiative, which is expected to lower energy costs, reduce environmental impacts, and improve power reliability across government institutions.
