Rivers State Ministry of Health Reaffirms Commitment to Prevent Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission
The Rivers State Ministry of Health has assured the public of its commitment to preventing the transmission of HIV and AIDS from mother to child. This announcement was made during an event marking this year’s World AIDS Day at the Christ Church Port Harcourt.
Dr. Adaeze Chidima Oreh, the Rivers State Commissioner of Health, addressed the attendees through the Project Manager of the Rivers State Control of AIDS, Dr. Naaziga Francis, highlighting the ministry’s initiatives in combating the epidemic.
Dr. Francis emphasized that HIV treatment is provided free of charge in all 23 Local Government Areas of the state. However, he expressed concern over why some individuals continue to seek treatment from unauthorized facilities.
“Our aim is to provide accessible and effective treatment to all, and we encourage everyone to utilize the available resources within the state,” Dr. Francis stated.
This year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Take the Right Path: Sustain the HIV Response and Stop HIV Among Children to End HIV in Nigeria,” underscores the importance of a sustained and collaborative effort in addressing the epidemic, particularly in preventing mother-to-child transmission.
The event served as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by HIV/AIDS, while reinforcing the commitment of the Rivers State Ministry of Health to protect the health of mothers and children across the region.
