Indeed, it was the best of humanitarian services at its full glare last week Thursday October 9th 2025, as 150 persons compressing of men and women from the ancient community of Abonnema in Akuku Toru Local Government Area came out to receive free Eye Medical Treatment organized by Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 Nigeria in conjunction with the Professional Expert Services of Nigerian Optometric Association, Rivers State Chapter.The Eye Camp Project which was carried out inside Daa Chief Ajumogobia Memorial Hall Abonnema was in fulfillment of one Rotary 7 areas of focus namely; disease prevention and treatment, in commemoration of this year’s World Sight Day with the theme: ‘Love Your Eyes’ also features screening of eyes, dispensing of eye drugs and giving out free eye glasses as the case may be.Fielding questions from newsmen on the importance of the project being observed globally, the President of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 Nigeria, Rotarian Ben Orabueze disclosed that what necessitated the move by members of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi to embark on such a life touching project was basically to assist the down trodden in our society, most especially, to those who may not have access to go to big hospital for medical checkup due to lack of money.“We are here in Abonnema in Akuku Toru LGA to render this services of Eye Medicare free of charge in company of team of qualified Optometric Doctors from Nigerian Optometric Association who are practically doing the screening services while members of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi funded and coordinated the project.” “The choice of having this project done in Abonnema today was the collective acceptance of the members of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, in going to the rural areas where the impact of assistance to the down trodden would be much recognized and also felt at the end of the day, having seen that majority of them are fishermen and women who could not have access to go to hospital for eye medical checkup”, the straight talking Rtn. Orabueze unmistakably added.The amiable Rotarian President further disclosed that “there won’t be any practical surgery to be done here instead documentation of serious eye cases would be made and the affected patient be referred to where he or she would be properly taken care of in due time.Also in a separate interview, the Service Project Chairman Rotarian Daniel Rich was full of praises for members of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 for coming out in their numbers towards the successful organization of the Eye camp project in commemoration of this year’s World Sight Day.His Words, “I thank God for a very clement weather all throughout the programme as well as members of the club for coming out in their numbers to be part of the project that recorded an unprecedented numbers of patients from the community”.The hardworking Club Service Project Chairman, however used the opportunity to encourage all the patients to do well to strictly adhere to doctors instructions by taking their drugs as being prescribed, believing that with time their eye problems would be corrected.Some of the beneficiaries of the free Eye Medicare treatment who bared their feelings to our reporter could not hold back their joy than to express profound gratitude to members of Rotary Club of Trans Amadi District 9141 for their immense great gesture while praying God to replenish their purse in hundred folds so that they will continue to be touching lives positively most especially to the down trodden in the society.
