The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has announced an indefinite strike beginning today, December 1st, affecting all workers across the six area councils of the FCT.
The directive was issued by the council’s chairman, Knabanyi Idalo, in a statement released in Abuja on Saturday. The move aligns with a communiqué from the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on November 8 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Idalo explained that the NEC had urged the councils’ chairmen to implement the national minimum wage of ₦70,000, a demand that has reportedly been met with resistance from the chairmen of the respective area councils.
“In light of their refusal to address this pressing issue, the organised labour, during its State Administrative Council meeting on November 12, unanimously resolved to strictly follow the national directive and embark on this indefinite strike,” Idalo stated.
The strike is expected to disrupt services within the FCT and place increased pressure on the local councils to meet the wage demands. Workers and union members are expected to rally in solidarity as the protest unfolds.
