The Police Command in Anambra has warned individuals and groups against organising a parallel New Yam Festival in defiance of community leaders recognised by the state government.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued the warning in a statement on Friday in Awka.
He noted that security reports indicated possible threats during the ongoing new yam celebrations across communities in the state.
“The police command strongly warns individuals and groups against acts capable of breaching the peace. In particular, any attempt to organise parallel events or to undermine or disrespect community/government-recognised leadership during the festivities will not be tolerated, as offenders will be made to face the full weight of the law,” Ikenga said.
According to him, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu has directed all Divisional Police Officers, tactical teams and Area Commanders to intensify visibility policing, patrols and intelligence gathering within their jurisdictions.
“These measures are aimed at ensuring maximum security, law and order before, during and after the celebrations,” he added.
The Command extended its goodwill to communities observing the festival and wished them a peaceful and joyous celebration.
