Turkish police have detained 161 people suspected of links to the Islamic State (IS) in a nationwide counter-terrorism operation, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Friday.

The week-long operation spanned 38 provinces, including major cities such as Ankara and Istanbul, Yerlikaya said in a post on the social media platform X.

The suspects were alleged to have provided financial support to IS. Police also seized unlicensed weapons, organisational documents and digital materials during the raids.

Yerlikaya pledged that such operations would continue “without interruption for the peace and security of our nation.”

In July, Turkish police detained 153 suspects across 28 provinces in a similar counter-terrorism sweep targeting IS.

Türkiye designated IS as a terrorist organisation in 2013 and has since blamed it for a series of deadly attacks in the country. It has continued to carry out counter-terrorism operations domestically and abroad to clamp down on its members and activities.
