The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has taken a significant step forward in ensuring uninterrupted power supply to its administrative hub, thanks to a recent intervention by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The Senate building of the institution now enjoys 24-hour electricity following the installation and commissioning of a 30KW solar-powered system.
This initiative, which includes a solar power inverter and rooftop solar panels, was donated by the NDDC and is designed to guarantee consistent energy for the smooth running of daily administrative operations. Staff working in the Senate building now have reliable access to electricity, eliminating frequent disruptions caused by power outages.
Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, commended the Managing Director and CEO of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for the donation. He noted that the intervention will enhance productivity and improve the overall efficiency of the institution’s governance structure. Prof. Georgewill further urged university staff to make the best use of the facility while also ensuring regular maintenance to preserve its long-term functionality.
The installation represents a sustainable energy solution that not only reduces dependency on the national grid but also demonstrates the value of renewable energy in supporting Nigeria’s educational institutions. With this development, UNIPORT joins the growing list of universities embracing green energy for stable and eco-friendly power supply.
