Nigerian filmmaker Ugezu J. Ugezu has criticised the notion of sponsoring a woman’s education with the expectation of marrying her, advising men to desist from such practice to avoid heartbreak.
The filmmaker and actor shared the advice on his social media platforms, addressing men who fund women’s education.
According to him, supporting a lady through school does not guarantee marriage afterwards.
“That you paid the school fees of a maiden and assisted financially in shaping her life does not mean you must marry her. There are things a man must do and leave for the universe. If she finally says no, walk away,” he wrote.
He added that it has been suggested it is better to marry women first before taking full responsibility for sponsoring their education, or alternatively to support them with no strings attached if one can afford it.
Ugezu is a well-known Nigerian actor, filmmaker and musician, celebrated for his contributions to Nollywood and his role as a cultural commentator.
He has directed and acted in numerous films and runs the production company Surplus Entertainment Limited. He has also used his platform to discuss social and political issues in Nigeria, often with an emphasis on preserving Igbo culture.
In January, he was inducted into the ruling class of his hometown, Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra State. In 2025, he released the Nigerian epic film The Sacred Price for the Throne. He was further recognised for his cultural contributions with the chieftaincy title of Unuku of Idu Kingdom in November 2022.
