The Nigerian Navy is set to establish a new base in Yauri, located in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security in the country’s inland waterways.
A delegation from the office of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, disclosed the plan during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at Government House, Birnin Kebbi.
Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who led the delegation, explained that the initiative is aimed at extending naval presence along the River Niger, which has been increasingly exploited by criminal elements for smuggling and other illicit activities.
“River Niger is a national asset supporting agriculture and power generation, but unfortunately, it is also being used to escalate insecurity,” Nwatu stated. “With an existing base in Niger State, a corresponding presence in Kebbi is necessary to fully secure the area.”
Governor Idris welcomed the development, describing it as a timely response to ongoing security concerns, especially in Southern Kebbi. He emphasised the strategic importance of Kebbi, which shares borders with Niger and the Benin Republic, and pledged full support for the naval operations.
The governor also announced that temporary accommodation would be provided for the take-off of the new base while preparations for permanent infrastructure are underway.
