Turkmenistan, one of the world’s most isolated countries, has taken a major step toward opening up to the world by introducing a new electronic visa (e-visa) system. The government officially removed the long-standing requirement for a letter of invitation, making it significantly easier for international travelers to visit.
The new law, signed in April 2025, allows tourists and business visitors to apply for their visas online through a simplified platform. Previously, travelers had to go through a complex process involving embassy visits and formal invitations from Turkmen institutions—making Turkmenistan one of the most difficult countries to access.
With the launch of the e-visa system, visitors will be able to apply from abroad, receive digital approvals, and enter the country with fewer bureaucratic obstacles. Officials say the aim is to stimulate tourism, attract investment, and improve the country’s global image.
Turkmenistan is home to incredible attractions like the white marble city of Ashgabat, the ancient Silk Road ruins of Merv, and the famous Darvaza gas crater, also known as the “Gates of Hell.” By relaxing its visa rules, the country hopes to welcome more tourists and showcase its unique cultural and natural heritage.
In addition to tourism, the e-visa policy is expected to support business travel and regional cooperation. President Serdar Berdimuhamedow has emphasized the need to modernize Turkmenistan’s economy and increase international engagement.
While full implementation details are still being finalized, migration authorities have indicated that travelers can apply up to six months in advance and that multiple-entry options will be available.
This reform marks a major shift in Turkmenistan’s traditionally closed stance and offers a new opportunity for global travelers to explore one of Central Asia’s most mysterious nations.
