Serbian students and opposition supporters staged a demonstration in central Belgrade on Monday, blocking streets near the government building, according to reports.
The organisers had called for the rally to begin at noon at the intersection of Nemanjina and Kneza Milosa streets, where the foreign and defence ministries are also located. Protesters waved national and faculty flags, carried banners, and blew whistles and vuvuzelas.
After blocking the streets, the demonstrators marched through central Belgrade towards the Palace of Justice and later the interior ministry building. Police did not interfere with the protest.
Authorities said rival pro-government rallies on Sunday drew more than 126,000 people in 111 cities and towns.
Student and opposition protests began after the collapse of a canopy at a Novi Sad railway station on Nov. 1, 2024, which killed 16 people. Tensions escalated in mid-August, with as many as 17,000 people protesting across Serbia on Sept. 1.
Prime Minister Duro Macut has condemned the violence.
