The Police in Lagos on Monday arraigned a 55-year-old man, Ado Kola, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault and threat to life.
The defendant, whose address was not disclosed, was charged with felony, assault, threat to life, and breach of peace. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on Aug. 18 at about 2:00 p.m. at Abule-Odan, Era, Ijanikin, Lagos.
Ekpo alleged that the defendant conspired with others now at large to commit a felony with assault occasioning harm.
He said the defendant threatened to kill one Great Joseph, the complainant, by beating him with a cane and inflicting injuries on his body.
He further claimed that the defendant unlawfully covered the complainant’s face with black polythene bags before assaulting him, thereby conducting himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.
Ekpo said the offence contravened Sections 411, 56, 137, and 168 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with sureties in like sum.
He directed that one of the sureties must be a community leader who would deposit N50,000 into the account of the Chief Registrar of the court.
Layeni adjourned the case until Sept. 17 for mention.
