A businessman, Shamsuddeen Bello, on Wednesday took First Bank and Jaiz Bank before the Upper Shari’a Court sitting at Daura Road, Kaduna, over the savings of his late father.

The complainant, represented by his counsel, Jamilu Sulaiman, told the court that the registered next of kin to the deceased could not be located, prompting the family to appoint Bello as the available next of kin.

“I therefore pray the court to compel the banks to release the funds to the appointed next of kin to enable the family to proceed with the distribution of the inheritance in accordance with Shari’a law,” he said.

The defendants were neither present in court nor represented by legal counsel.

In his ruling, Judge Malam Auwal Abdullahi granted the complainant’s application made by his counsel.

“Both banks are to prepare and present the account balances of the deceased,” he said, adjourning the case to Sept. 23 for a report on compliance.
