Four senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their letters of defection were read separately on the floor of the Senate by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Wednesday.
The defecting senators are Francis Fadahunsi and Olubiyi Fadeyi, both from Osun State; and Akon Eyakenyi and Aniekan Bassey, both from Akwa Ibom State.
Present in the chamber to witness the proceedings were the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru; former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige; and some APC members of the House of Representatives.
With the defections, the APC now holds 70 seats in the Senate, while the PDP is left with 28.
The Labour Party has five senators, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) holds two, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have one senator each. Two seats remain vacant.
