Beauty and makeup firm, Nuban Cares, has launched an AI-powered skincare tool, “Skin Decoder,” designed to provide clinical-level skincare guidance and bridge gaps in African skincare products.

The Founder of Nuban Beauty and Nuban Cares, Stella Ndekile, disclosed this in an interview in Lagos on Friday.

Ndekile said the product was introduced to democratise access to skin health in Nigeria and across Africa, where professional dermatological care is often scarce.

According to her, *“many clients who come have already wasted time and money on products that did not work for their specific skin concerns.

“As a medical aesthetician, I constantly treat clients with acne, hyperpigmentation and barrier damage caused by using the wrong products.”*

She explained that a key feature of the Skin Decoder is its cultural sensitivity, noting that many global AI skincare tools are not trained on darker skin tones, which can lead to inaccurate recommendations.

“African skin behaves differently; hyperpigmentation and sensitivity to sun are common issues,” she said.

Ndekile added that the Skin Decoder was built to reflect these realities and calibrated to understand diverse skin tones, ensuring effectiveness for African consumers.

She said the tool provided an instant analysis of the user’s skin, assessing factors such as hydration, pigmentation, texture and pores.

According to her, this allowed consumers to make science-driven choices rather than relying on guesswork, improving skin health outcomes.

Ndekile emphasised that while the Skin Decoder does not replace a doctor, it serves as a crucial first step for many who cannot access professional care.

She noted that the technology would work alongside dermatologists, giving them better data and extending care to millions of people.

“Good skin health should not be reserved for only the privileged few,” she said.

Ndekile explained that the Skin Decoder would be offered as a free experience at the Lagos Makeup Fair and later be accessible online at no cost.

She added that the tool would provide personalised recommendations for Nuban Cares products, formulated to be both affordable and of medical grade.
