African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distanced itself from allegations of plotting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, affirming its commitment to pursuing power through democratic means.

The party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, in response to a tweet by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga had accused opposition parties of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration before the 2027 general elections.

Describing the claim as false and politically motivated, Abdullahi said such narratives were aimed at stifling dissent and intimidating opposition figures under the guise of national security.

“We are not soldiers, we are politicians. We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots. When the time comes, we will only present our solutions and an alternative vision of the future to the Nigerian people and leave them to make their choice,” he said.

He expressed surprise that the All Progressives Congress (APC), which itself once formed government from the opposition, now appeared intolerant of alternative voices.

Abdullahi called on the President to rein in his aides, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could destabilise the polity, especially with two years still left before the next general election.

He urged Nigerians to resist any attempt to delegitimise opposition parties or suppress democratic engagement.

According to him, the vitality of Nigeria’s democratic system lies in fostering a competitive, open, and participatory political environment.

He reiterated that the ADC remains dedicated to building a stronger nation through peaceful and lawful democratic processes.
