The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed over N130 million to 2,193 students of the Federal University Gashua (FUGashua), Yobe State.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Maimuna Waziri, disclosed this at a news conference in Gashua on Wednesday, ahead of the institution’s maiden and combined convocation.
She stated that N16 million was disbursed to 276 students in the first batch, while 1,917 students benefited from N114 million in the second batch.
Waziri said the university was actively sensitising more students to key into the scheme to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians.
She also revealed that over 300 lecturers at the university had benefited from research grant interventions supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
According to her, FUGashua undertook 62 capital projects between 2021 and 2024. These were funded through TETFund, capital appropriation, private organisations, and individual philanthropists.
Out of these, 49 projects had been completed, while 12 were ongoing and had reached 50 to 80 per cent completion levels.
A total of 3,449 graduates across six academic sets and four faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Management, and Social Sciences, will be awarded first degrees at the convocation.
Additionally, 12 graduands will receive Master of Public Administration (MPA) degrees.
Waziri said honorary doctorate degrees will be conferred on Senator Remi Tinubu, Wife of the President; Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State; Senator Ibrahim Geidam, Minister of Police Affairs; and Senator Ahmed Lawan, among others.
The convocation is scheduled for 12 July.
A pre-convocation lecture titled “Beyond the Horizon: Embracing the Unknown and Unlocking Your Full Potential” will be delivered on 11 July by Professor Isa Pantami, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
