Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has announced that all secondary schools in the country will be connected to the internet by the end of 2026.
Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Amarasuriya revealed that the government recently introduced an unlimited data package for schools at a monthly cost of 5,000 rupees (17 U.S. dollars).
She said smartboards and other computer equipment would also be supplied to approximately 1,500 schools as part of the broader digital education drive. A total of 1,900 smartboards will be distributed, and cabinet approval has been granted to expand the initiative to an additional 1,000 schools.
The Prime Minister added that a national education management information system is being developed to encompass all levels of the education sector.
She further noted that the Sri Lankan air force is providing technical support for the effort under the Clean Sri Lanka programme.
