GbaramatuVoice, a key media platform in the Niger Delta, has called for a national conversation on resource control, environmental justice, and the strategic role of the media in addressing regional challenges.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Publisher and Chief Executive Officer Jacob Abai announced that a public lecture titled “Gaps and Silences in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Economy: Appraisal of Resource Control, Security and Media Dynamics” will be held as part of the outlet’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
He said the lecture is intended to ignite national discussions on persistent issues of equity, justice, and security in the Niger Delta, alongside the media’s influence in shaping development narratives.
The anniversary, scheduled for 27 and 28 August, will also feature a Niger Delta Night of Honours.
“The two-day event will convene national leaders, policymakers, international oil companies, security experts, diplomats, academics, media professionals, youth leaders, and civil society stakeholders,” he noted.
“Ten years of reporting from the creeks and communities of the Niger Delta has taught us that the real stories of oil, conflict, justice, and survival are often buried beneath national headlines. The lecture will be a chance to bring those silences to the fore,” Abai said.
He added that the gathering would also deepen discussions on unresolved issues surrounding national unity and highlight how the media can catalyse meaningful development in the region.
