The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed 24 July for its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which will hold at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Mr Festus Faunter, the Deputy National Secretary of the party, disclosed this to journalists on Monday in Abuja after a closed-door session of the National Working Committee (NWC).

The meeting was convened following the resignation of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje as APC National Chairman on health grounds, a decision the NWC accepted, expressing gratitude and wishing him well.

“Whatever we do now, including the endorsement of the Acting National Chairman, must receive the blessing of the NEC. If during the NEC meeting, a new chairman is nominated, we will also accept that and wait for the convention to take a final position,” Faunter said.

He confirmed that the party had notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the NEC meeting.

He also noted that the NWC had discussed preparations for upcoming bye-elections in states with legislative vacancies arising from death or resignation, alongside early plans for Ward, Local Government, and State congresses.

“Dates for these exercises will be made public in due course,” he added.

The NEC, as the party’s highest decision-making body, is expected to deliberate on critical matters, including leadership succession, internal restructuring, and early strategies for the 2027 general elections.

Alhaji Ali Dalori has since assumed the role of Acting National Chairman. He was formerly the Deputy National Chairman (North-East) and pledged to lead with transparency, inclusion, and unity of purpose at a meeting with the party’s NWC.

President Bola Tinubu had directed Dalori to oversee the affairs of the party following Ganduje’s resignation last Friday.

“In accordance with the Constitution of our party and the directive of President Tinubu, I have assumed the position of Acting National Chairman following the resignation of Ganduje,” Dalori said.

Ganduje, a former two-term governor of Kano State, formally submitted his resignation to the party’s NWC through its National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, citing health and personal reasons.

He had assumed leadership of the APC in August 2023.
