U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday referenced a signed agreement with China but did not provide any specifics.
“We just signed with China yesterday,” the president said during a White House event, while discussing trade negotiations with other countries.
Trump also suggested that a “very big” deal with India might be on the horizon.
Since initiating a trade war with Beijing in February, the United States and China, the world’s two largest economies, have been embroiled in a tit-for-tat tariff exchange that has unsettled global markets.
In April, Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to as high as 145 per cent. However, there had been signs of a potential thaw in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Trump had mentioned a tentative agreement with China involving reduced export restrictions on rare earth elements, as well as progress in resolving the ongoing tariff dispute.
There has been no immediate response from Chinese authorities regarding the claimed agreement.
