The Rivers Peace Initiative has praised President Bola Tinubu for convening a peace meeting involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Speaker of the House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule and other lawmakers.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, the group’s Convener, Mr Obinna Ebogidi, said the outcome of the reconciliation meeting signalled hope for political stability in the state after nearly two years of turbulence.
Ebogidi described the President’s intervention as “a clear act of statesmanship and a commitment to peace in Rivers and Nigeria at large.”
He said the political crisis had hampered governance in the state and that the agreement marked a necessary turning point.
“The reconciliation was long overdue. Choosing peace is a better option than allowing the crisis to linger and further damage public trust,” he said.
The convener also applauded the governor for embracing peace, saying it reflected maturity and prioritisation of the state’s wellbeing above political pride.
Ebogidi urged members of the State Assembly to embrace the same spirit of cooperation and align with the executive arm to deliver meaningful development to the people.
He further advised any dissatisfied individuals or groups to seek redress through constitutional and democratic processes.
The Rivers Peace Initiative, he added, would continue to monitor the implementation of the agreement and advocate for its full adherence.
“We call on all stakeholders to put the people of Rivers first and ensure that peace is sustained for the sake of progress,” he said.
