Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that President Bola Tinubu is committed to fostering a vibrant political opposition and urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resolve its internal leadership crisis without delay.

Akpabio, who represented the President at the inauguration of the new interchange connecting Wole Soyinka Way (Arterial Road N20) to the Murtala Mohammed Expressway in Abuja, made the remarks on Wednesday.

He advised opposition parties, including the Labour Party (LP), to reorganise and play their roles effectively in Nigeria’s democracy.

“You people got yourselves into this confusion; try and get yourself out of it very quickly because President Bola Tinubu is interested in seeing a vibrant opposition,” Akpabio said. “It saddens Tinubu when he sees the way the opposition in Nigeria is in disarray.”

He disclosed that a senator had defected from the LP, indicating that the party was also experiencing internal challenges.

“Even the LP is cracked, and people who are strong members of the party are angling to rule Nigeria when they cannot put a small political party like that in order,” he said.

He noted that Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District, defected from the LP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier in the day.

“I’m happy to receive them because our doors are open in the APC. Congratulations to Imasuen, who has decided to leave the fractured LP to join the APC,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, criticised the PDP’s recent directive asking National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu to resume office.

The acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, had announced Anyanwu’s reinstatement during a press conference. However, Wike dismissed the move as unnecessary and legally unfounded.

“The National Secretary has been working and will continue to work. He doesn’t require anybody to direct him to resume work,” he said.

He attributed the situation to a misunderstanding of legal procedure and affirmed that he would not support actions that undermine the party.
