Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice-Chair of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council during the ongoing conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by Eunice Akro, Deputy Director and Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit.
Akro described the year 2025 as a global testament to Nigeria’s commitment to digital transformation and inclusive innovation, calling the election a significant milestone.
“The ITU, founded in 1865, is the oldest specialised United Nations agency responsible for information and communications technologies,” she said.
“It is mandated to connect the world through innovative, inclusive, and sustainable digital solutions, facilitating global communication networks.”
In his acceptance speech, Tijani expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in him and reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to advancing the ITU’s core objectives.
“Nigeria remains committed in her resolve to supporting the collective mission of the ITU, particularly by prioritising key areas,” he said.
He listed those areas as the development of resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure and ensuring timely access to meaningful connectivity, especially for underserved communities.
The minister thanked ITU Secretary-General, Ms Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the management team, and member states for their trust, and congratulated the newly elected ITU Chair, Ms Cristiana Flutur of Romania.
He pledged to work closely with her to achieve their shared goals.
Tijani called on all members to make the ITU a beacon of inclusive innovation and trusted collaboration.
He noted that the world is currently at a defining moment shaped by rapid technological advancement and profound structural shifts.
“With this leadership position, Nigeria is poised in an enhanced capacity to shape the African continent and beyond,” he said.
“Yet, we are also uniquely privileged to witness the transformative power of digital technology, a force that allows us to be more introspective, inclusive, and informed as we shape the future.”
