Police in Ondo State have arrested five individuals for allegedly assaulting a vice-principal during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Akure.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade.
According to the statement, the vice-principal, identified as Mr Rotifa of Complete Child Development Centre in Awule, Akure, was reportedly attacked on Friday by thugs allegedly hired by the parent of a student who was prevented from engaging in exam malpractice.
The student, Wisdom Elisha, was said to have brought an android phone into the examination hall and was stopped from using it, prompting the reported assault.
“Following the assault on the Vice Principal of Complete Child Development Centre, Akure, the Ondo State Police Command has arrested Mrs Dorcas Asije and four other accomplices,” Ayanlade stated.
He added that the arrests were made on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) leading a tactical unit to apprehend the suspects.
The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), and charges are expected upon completion of the investigation.
“The public is advised to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station,” Ayanlade said.
