A 34-year-old man, Aje Olaniyi, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a man of N400,000.

The defendant, who has no fixed address, is facing a single charge of fraud.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Akinwale Oriyomi, the alleged offence occurred in March 2024 at the Odo-Ado area of Ado-Ekiti.

“The defendant and others at large conspired to obtain N400,000 from the complainant, Mr Alabi Sunday, under the pretext of selling him a parcel of land. He later resold the same land to another person without notifying the complainant,” the prosecutor told the court.

The offence, he noted, contravenes Sections 421 and 329(3) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

Oriyomi requested an adjournment to allow time to review the case file and assemble witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

His counsel, Mrs Adunni Olanipekun, appealed to the court to grant bail, assuring that her client would not abscond.

Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun granted bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned to 30 June for hearing.
