The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has urged Nigerian pilgrims participating in the 2025 Hajj to comply fully with the laws of Saudi Arabia and adhere to guidance provided by officials throughout the pilgrimage.
The Executive Chairman of NAHCON, Prof. Abdullahi Usman, gave the advice on Thursday at the flag-off ceremony for the first batch of pilgrims at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.
According to the correspondent, the inaugural flight, launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima with support from Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo, is set to convey 315 pilgrims from Abia, Bayelsa, and Imo states to Saudi Arabia.
Usman reminded the pilgrims of the spiritual significance of the journey, urging them to maintain discipline and be good ambassadors of Nigeria.
“You are about to undertake one of the most important journeys of your lives as Duyufur-Rahman (Guests of Allah). Represent Nigeria well. Obey your officials. Follow the rules of the Kingdom and those of your country,” he said.
He also advised pilgrims to stay healthy, especially by staying hydrated due to the expected extreme heat conditions in Saudi Arabia.
“Keep yourselves away from harm, whether natural or man-made, by obeying guidelines. Drink plenty of water and juice to remain healthy,” he added.
Usman revealed that as of May 9, a total of 64,188 Nigerians had registered for the pilgrimage, including those sponsored by state governments and private tour operators. He noted that while some tour operators were still processing visas, NAHCON had made thorough preparations for the pilgrims’ arrival in Madinah and Jeddah.
“Our target is to complete the entire transportation operation within two weeks, God willing,” he stated.
Reflecting on his first eight months in office, Usman highlighted the commission’s efforts to make the Hajj more affordable and convenient for Nigerians, despite global economic pressures.
“By the mercy of Allah, and with the support of government and stakeholders, we succeeded in stabilising the cost of Hajj in spite of global inflation and currency fluctuations,” he said.
He noted the historic acquisition of Tent A Plus in Mina for VIP pilgrims, describing it as a milestone in improving the welfare and dignity of Nigerian pilgrims.
Usman also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their continued support, particularly their role in introducing a Basic Travel Allowance credit card system for pilgrims.
“Their leadership inspires us to serve our pilgrims with excellence and dedication,” he added.
