The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Sokoto State have commended the state government for successfully implementing the N70,000 minimum wage.

In a joint press conference held in Sokoto on Wednesday, NLC state chairman, Mr. Aliyu Jangul, and NULGE counterpart, Mr. Ibrahim Abubakar, praised the state’s swift action in fulfilling the new wage requirements.

Jangul clarified recent remarks made by NULGE National President, Mr. Ali Haruna-Kankara, who had suggested that Sokoto was among states yet to implement the new minimum wage. He stated that since January, Gov. Ahmad Aliyu’s administration has ensured the payment of the increased wage to all civil servants.

“We want to set the record straight – Sokoto State was the first in the country to fully implement the new minimum wage,” Jangul confirmed. “We were part of the verification committee that identified ghost workers, an essential step before the new salary structure was rolled out.”

Both labour leaders lauded the governor for his commitment to workers’ welfare and expressed their hope that the positive relationship between the government and employees would continue, with further improvements in workers’ conditions.
