In a bold response to escalating data prices, the Nigerian Senate has called on the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to engage with telecommunications providers for a comprehensive review of recent data cost increases.

This resolution, which emerged during a plenary session on Wednesday, was initiated by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC-Cross River), who highlighted the urgent need for affordable internet services in the country. The motion, titled “Urgent Need to Address the Increased Cost of Data Services in Nigeria,” addresses a pressing concern affecting millions of Nigerians, particularly the youth.

Dramatic Increase in Data Costs

Senator Ekpenyong revealed alarming statistics indicating that telecommunications companies have raised data prices by as much as 200%. This spike has caused immense financial pressure on Nigerians, especially the younger population, who increasingly rely on the internet for various income-generating activities, including freelancing, digital marketing, and remote work.

“The surge in data prices significantly threatens the economic survival of young Nigerians,” explained Ekpenyong. “With many opting for mobile networks due to the unaffordability of fibre-optic services, this sudden increase limits their access to essential digital resources.”

Commitment to Supporting Young Entrepreneurs

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed strong support for the motion, affirming its potential to positively impact young entrepreneurs. “This motion will help young business owners remain operational while ensuring that they maintain affordable pricing, which is crucial for generating revenue and profits,” Akpabio stated.

The Senate’s resolution also includes a call for the Ministry of Communications to establish a policy framework aimed at ensuring affordable internet services across Nigeria. The proposal highlights the need for the Federal Government to support tech hubs throughout the country, providing free or subsidized internet access to young innovators, students, and entrepreneurs.

Investigation into High Data Prices

To tackle the root causes of high data costs, the Senate has instructed its Committee on Communications to conduct a thorough investigation. Their mandate includes identifying factors contributing to the surge in data pricing and proposing actionable solutions to foster a sustainable telecommunications sector that benefits all Nigerians.

This proactive stance from the Senate signals a commitment to digital inclusivity and aims to ensure that every Nigerian has access to affordable digital services, thereby fostering economic growth and innovation.
