The arraignment of Ezekiel Onyedikachi, popularly known as EzeeTee, the former manager of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, over the alleged conversion of $840,477, was stalled on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Lagos due to an administrative procedure.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed a 15-count amended charge against Onyedikachi, bordering on conversion and money laundering.

When the charge, marked FHC/L/578C/2025, was called, EFCC counsel Bilikisu Buhari announced her appearance for the prosecution, while Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN) and Dr. Monday Ubani (SAN) appeared for the defendant.

However, Justice Alexander Owoeye halted proceedings, citing an ongoing administrative procedure that prevented him from making any pronouncement on the matter.

The EFCC had initially filed a four-count charge against Onyedikachi over the alleged fraudulent conversion of $345,000 before amending the charges.

Onyedikachi, who was absent at the last court hearing, was present in court on Thursday for his arraignment.

After the parties announced their appearances, Justice Owoeye stated that the case was subject to an administrative process and that until it was completed, he could not proceed with the hearing.

“There is an administrative procedure going on in this case, and until it is completed, I cannot make any pronouncement on it,” the judge said.

He also declined a request by Ojukwu that all parties maintain the status quo pending the resolution of the administrative procedure.

A mild drama unfolded outside the courtroom when Onyedikachi, upon emerging, suddenly took to his heels while journalists positioned their cameras to record him. Media personnel were seen capturing snapshots as he ran out of the court premises.

The case has been adjourned until May 14, 2025.
