Israel on Sunday permitted the entry of nearly 460 lorries laden with humanitarian supplies into Gaza, according to the Israeli authority overseeing Palestinian affairs.

The figure represents a sharp increase from the recent daily average of about 200 trucks, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said on Monday.

It remains unclear if deliveries will continue during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which began on Monday evening. COGAT did not immediately respond to inquiries on the matter.

The agency added that international organisations, including the United Nations, collected around 310 trucks’ worth of aid from the Gaza side of the crossings on Sunday for distribution.

However, the UN has stressed that at least 500 truckloads daily are required to adequately meet the needs of the more than two million Palestinians living in the blockaded enclave.
